Statement from Captain Michael Brown on revelations that James Craig was not a Licensed Officer as Detroit Police Chief
“The news we are hearing about James Craig is very troubling, but not surprising. I’ve said all along that this race for Governor is about character as much as the issues of the day.”
“The revelation that Jim Craig was not licensed to be a police officer and did not follow through on his commitment to get certified speaks volumes. It’s not surprising to me when I see the high violent crime rates and low rates of solving crime in Detroit. A real police officer understands his priorities.” stated Michael Brown a 33 year State Police veteran and certified police officer.
“Jim Craig has let down all of law enforcement with his cavalier attitude toward the uniform and the badge. When we put on the uniform and badge we not only swear an oath to protect and defend but we follow rules and procedures – foremost among those is being certified through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). The 20,000 police officers in Michigan understand how this fraudulent representation reflects on the profession. Walking around in uniform like it’s Halloween is not going to cut it with the citizens of Michigan and real crime fighters.”
“MCOLES certification requires passing a written test, a firearms test, a physical and a psychological test, as well as filing documentation. Jim Craig did none of that year after year.”
“He wasn’t even qualified to police a traffic crash in Michigan.”
“Law enforcement is a serious business, and the simple fact that Craig didn’t follow through on his promise to get certified says a lot about his character,” remarked Michael Brown, the top crime fighter and leader in this race for Governor.
“Now that Craig is running for Governor. He is touting his experience, when the truth is Detroit remains the nation’s most violent big city just as it was when Craig was hired in 2013. I’m not impressed by these failures and his fraudulent representation as a police officer in Michigan.” stated Captain Mike. “I have been really fighting crime in Michigan for 33 years and this level of deceitfulness is not sitting well with me.”
“Mugging for cameras was not what the people of Detroit needed, and it’s certainly not what the people of Michigan deserve. They deserve a dedicated public servant who tells it like it is. Not someone whose entire campaign is built on a fabrication as a fake cop.”
“Citizens and reporters feel free to ask me any questions about this and you will get honest answers. The State of Michigan deserves a leader who tells the truth.”
Michigan Public Radio today reported, “Michigan gubernatorial candidate James Craig was not a licensed law enforcement officer in the State of Michigan during his tenure as Detroit police chief. His certification status is “lapsed,” according to public records obtained by Michigan Radio. “
